Yala National Park is one of the first national parks of old Ceylon. This wonderful park was established in 1938, marking almost 979 square kilometres of the parking area, which is located in southeast Sri Lanka. To this day, Yala remains one of the most popular national parks, with thousands of annual visitors.

The park is remarkable due to the variety of habitats and animals recorded. It contains dry and moist monsoon, semi-deciduous, and thorn forests. And also, Yala is rich with grasslands, marshes, sandy beaches, freshwater rivers, lagoons, lakes, and marine wetlands.
Wonders abound at this truly unique national park, from wildlife like the Sri Lankan elephant, leopard, sloth bear, and around 45 mammals. Many bird species have been recorded, including at least six endemic species, around 25 freshwater fish, around 50 reptiles, and 20 amphibians.
Yala keeps its secrets about ancient civilization with over 300 old, ruined Sthupa around Sithulpawwa Rajamaha Viharaya and Magul Maha Viharaya. Also, the ancient cultural practice of Pada-Yathra is repeated yearly to finish with Skandha Kumara Temple, popularly known as Katharagama Temple. Also, seasonal spiritual dancing practices keep an exotic face to attract more visitors to the area.

- I started this newsletter/website for fun. It all began when I e-mailed a few friends who traveled a lot, and wanted to earn as many miles as I did. We competed to see who could accrue more miles, and after kicking their butts (I learned a lot traveling 150,000 miles a year), I decided to be nice and help my friends out.
